That begins with a complimentary consultation in our Acton, Billerica, Lowell, or Westford office!
Because this is one of the most important appointments you’ll have with us, we do our best to make it as informative and stress-free as possible. Many of our patients are nervous about this first visit, but being prepared can help you feel more confident! With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at what you can expect from your initial consultation with us.
What does an orthodontic evaluation look like?
When you arrive at your chosen office location, you’ll be welcomed by the scheduling staff at the front desk. We email new patient forms once a consultation appointment has been set up, but these can also be accessed here or completed after you sign in. Once we call you back, you’ll be given a brief tour to help you feel more comfortable with your surroundings. We’ll review your medical and dental history and take some digital images and x-rays of your mouth. These give us a good look at what’s happening beneath the surface of your smile!
Once these are complete, you’ll be introduced to one of our experienced orthodontists, either Dr. Jay, Dr. Brian, Dr. Tim or Dr. Steve, Jr. They’ll listen to your concerns before performing a thorough oral examination that will help us identify any orthodontic issues that may need attention, either now or in the future. Your orthodontist will also listen to your goals of treatment and work with you to design a treatment plan that fully encompasses all of your needs.
The information collected from your photos, x-rays, and examination forms part of something we call diagnostic records. This is what allows our doctors to diagnose any present issues and develop a customized treatment plan for you. We will also use these records to track how your teeth move throughout the treatment process.
We want to be sure you always understand what’s happening both before and during treatment. We allow plenty of time for this first visit so that you don’t feel rushed! You can expect it to last about an hour, during which we’ll discuss important topics like:
- your diagnosis
- the treatment options available to you
- how long your treatment is likely to take
- the total expected cost of treatment
- the financing options we offer

Investing in the smile you’ve always wanted
Once you’ve decided on a treatment plan with one of our orthodontists, we’ll outline everything included in it. Every patient has unique needs and will respond to treatment in their own way. That means the total cost will vary from case to case, but we’ll ensure you understand the investment needed for your new smile before treatment begins.
There are many short- and long-term benefits to treatment with our practice. We believe everyone should have access to the high-quality orthodontic care they need! Our practice is proud to offer patients a range of affordable treatment and financing options. If you have dental insurance that covers orthodontic treatment, this can significantly reduce your personal costs! Because policies can greatly vary, we’ll review yours to determine the appropriate course of action before treatment begins. As a courtesy, we’ll also file your insurance claim for you once you’ve started your orthodontic journey.
What happens once the consultation is complete?
Once your consultation is complete, it’s time to get your treatment started. In many cases, we can begin that same day! We can also schedule this for another day if you prefer. Placing braces takes about half an hour and an Invisalign scan is usually completed in less than ten minutes. During this time, we’ll walk you through all of the care associated with your treatment. This will include how to maintain good oral hygiene during the treatment process, how to take care of your appliance, any foods you need to avoid, what constitutes an orthodontic emergency, and more!
Regular follow-up visits will be an essential part of your treatment plan, and you can expect appointments with us every 4-8 weeks or so. During these visits, one of our doctors will check that your teeth are moving in a healthy way and that everything is progressing the way it should be. They’ll also use this time to adjust your appliance if necessary. If you’re wearing braces, the wire may be changed at this time as well.
We try to schedule appointments for a day and time that are convenient for you. However, we know that life happens and things can sometimes get in the way of you making it to our office. If this happens, we simply ask that you let us know as soon as possible so we can reschedule. This will help us keep your treatment plan on track!
